FEB 18 | 7PM | Session Americana with Humbletown "On the Road to Montreal"

February 18, 2025 07:00 PM until February 18, 2025 11:00 PM

The Folk Alliance International (FAI) 2025 is happening in Montreal and the Zenbarn music community is fortunate to be catching two compelling acts as they make their way north to the event:  Session Americana of Boston and Humbletown of South Dakota.

SESSION AMERICANA with Eleanor Buckland

A group of musicians musicians, Session Americana deftly creates a unique live experience that celebrates the joy of the music and of each other and with the addition of singer-songwriter, guitarist and fiddle player Eleanor Buckland that joy has never been more evident. Looking back, the group has a natural, almost inevitable evolution from a loose bunch of friends sitting around swapping songs in a bar, to a hot ticket weekly residency, to a touring collective. Along the way, they have made 10 records, played clubs and festivals across the US and Europe, and developed some deep collaborative bonds with a wide community of musicians. Their diligent avoidance of music business “shoulds” have led them down a quirky and joyful path through the music world and the result is evident in the musical prowess they bring to every show. Swapping instruments, lead vocals and their original songs, Session Americana is constantly exploring new collaborations and touring like a band out of time, still searching for a welcoming and homey venue, a long lunch with old friends and a good glass of wine.

After completing a five week tour together earlier this year throughout Ireland and Europe the band will continue to be joined by singer-songwriter, guitarist and fiddle player Eleanor Buckland playing in the band. Eleanor made her start as one-third of Lula Wiles, the Boston-based folk-rock trio that became an acoustic music scene favorite with their three critically hailed albums. Now living in Durham NC, the singer songwriter has turned to a different side of her musical interests as a solo artist. Buckland’s debut album You Don’t Have To Know (released October 2021 on Soundly Music) sets her deeply personal songs against inventive indie rock arrangements.

HUMBLETOWN

Formed in the humble prairie town of Vermillion, South Dakota, HUMBLETOWN has emerged as a powerful multi-genre bluegrass-inspired ensemble. Now based out of the Black Hills, the band is inspired by the quiet beauty of pine-filled forests, with original songs inspired by their home and travels, intricately performed on clawhammer banjo, flatpick guitar, and upright bass. With music that combines influences of bluegrass, old time, hot club swing, Americana, and classic country, Humbletown will take you on a musical journey that stretches across time and space.

Their 2022 debut album “The Path I Chose to Walk” received international acclaim. Americana UK’s review described the album: “The first impression on listening to these songs around virtuosos on clawhammer banjo and flat-picking guitar is that this entire collection must have been something discovered nearly a century ago by the great ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax.” Their album’s title track video “Vines” was premiered by Bluegrass Situation and Americana Highways described their album as “A little old-time country, folk & bluegrass. The musicianship is stellar, with fingerpicking on acoustic guitar & banjo. The mix of male & female vocals balances the material impressively.”

Humbletown has toured nationally and regionally and has  shared the stage with such acts as Wood Belly, Charlie Parr, Damn Tall Buildings, Reverend Payton's Big Damn Band, Songs from the Road Band, and many more.
